During my research I made a unique discovery with environmental design and lighting technique. A Luminarium is a large inflatable, tent like structure with multiple tunnels, chasms and spaces. The entirety of the inside is beautifully illuminated with an explosion of colourful, ambient lights located under the surface of the structure. The internal material is similar to that of a bouncy castle, a rubbery sort of plastic or latex. This particular material is very glossy and highly reflective, resulting in the light to easily slip through and bounce off of the surfaces. The inner structure is a variety of cylindrical and spherical shapes, enabling the light to reach all corners, creating gradients of colour and brightness as well as colour blending. Aside from the visual appeal, a Luminarium also plays deeply atmospheric sounds or can often have musicians in selected areas of the structure. The combination of music and colour is an incredibly emotional and atmospheric experience. The different hues of colour and accompanying sound enable it's visitors to reflect and feel within the environment. Freely able to lay on the ground or up the side of a chasm, explore the different caves of colour or play an exploratory game of hide and seek. A Luminarium is a sensory invigorating experience that has no words, no text, nothing but you and your imagination, stripped bare, free. The clever components of a Luminarium is the 'freedom' aspect. The freedom to experience colour in it's purest form and how sound compliments those colours and gives us emotional understanding. We can actively 'feel' colour within these experiences. I believe Luminariums are incredible pieces of art that are well considered and produced. The cleverly designed inner infrastructure, combination of illuminated colours and music all create a dynamic and unique atmosphere, all through the primary power of 'light'. How light enables us to see and feel colour, it is incredibly clever and I feel deeply inspired. It is within experience you can truly grasp the shear effectiveness of light and how when used with innovation, can create the most beautiful environments. Here are some images and a video clip of a Luminarium:
